Squashing the Right Fit retirement rumor

I’ve been hearing rumblings that Lane Bryant is planning to discontinue the Right Fit line. A nice reader pointed me to a thread on the Lane Bryant Facebook page that confirms that this is untrue. See the screenshot below:

right fit

So I guess they’re keeping the line but going back to traditional sizing. I’m pretty relieved myself. I really rely on the Right Fit stuff and I’d be sad to see them go!

Some picks from Lane Bryant

As I mentioned Monday, Lane Bryant is offering their online customers 25% off with the code 000252232. I've rounded up some of my current favs from the LB so let's take a look.

Corduroy blazer
I picked this up in the "turtle green" color. It has enough stretch to fit really well on me and I have such a hard time finding jackets that work for both my shoulders and hips. I think it'll be cute layered with other neutral colors and jeans. I like that it hits at the hip and isn’t too long. A long, boxy, corduroy blazer isn’t super flattering on… well, anyone. This one is cut very nicely.

Boyfriend jean
I know there are plenty of you out there who stay far, far away from denim trends, especially trends that involve pre-destroyed fabric. But, like them or not, this baggy, worn in style is very much the thing right now. I don't see it being the thing for very long so you might as well get them on sale. Right now, you’ll wear them rolled up like you see in the picture with heels or metallic flats. You can roll them down and wear them with sandals in the spring. The key with the whole boyfriend trend is to look like you kind of just ended up in those clothes. If you look like you’re trying to look casual and disheveled, it won’t work. Good luck!

Keyhole ponte knit dress
I don't own this dress and I never will because I have absolutely nowhere to wear it BUT I think it's really cute and retro in a chic way. I love that color, the length, the cutout detail at the neck. Super cute.

Hooded peacoat
I don't mean to alarm you but for many of us, it's going to be coat weather soon. If you're in need of a new winter coat and you want the best selection to choose from, start looking soon and then snatch one up when you have a coupon. I have a wool peacoat like this one (without a hood) from Lane Bryant that I picked up a few years ago and it's going strong. I treat it nicely and it keeps me toasty warm.

Lace trim cami
I have this in turquoise. I picked it up because I'm a bit of a cami collector and I don't have any with a lot of lace detail. I like to let the lace peek out from under a V neck top or cardigan. These run on the big side so if you’re between sizes, go down a size. Just please pick one up in a pretty color and not black. You have enough black!

The scoop on the Right Fit Straight Leg jeans!

Right Fit straight leg jeans! The folks at Lane Bryant were kind enough to send me a pair of the new Right Fit straight leg jeans to try. They’re Right Fit Blue size 6 petite in black (the pair pictured left are the “medium sandblast” blue). I’m between inseam lengths so for jeans, I’ll generally wear a petite length with flats and an average length with any other shoe.

Before even putting the jeans on, I noticed that the waistband is a little wider and there are double belt loops, which are nice touches. The black denim isn’t a true black; it’s a dusty, dark gray with distressing, whiskering, fading, etc. There's even a bit of subtle whiskering below the knee area. The denim itself feels much smoother than the denim used for the trouser jeans and is a nice, substantial weight (but not too heavy!).

I did a sniff test right out of the packaging and there was a definite chemically dye smell. I decided to wash them before letting the smell sway my overall opinion of the jeans. There was still a very faint smell after the first wash but I suspect it’ll fade over the next couple of runs through the washer.

Now for the important part – the cut. From the waist to the knee, the jeans fit a lot like the bootcuts. The cut from the knee to hem is straight but not so stick straight that the jeans are tight around my calves, which was my main concern. The leg is definitely straight and not tapered. The wider waistband is a welcomed improvement and should be more comfortable.

Overall, my first impression is that the straight leg jeans are a lot like the bootcuts but with… a straighter leg! I’ll be ordering the medium sandblast blue color in Blue 6 but in the average length. The inseam might be just a bit too long with most of my shoes but I think the hem will bunch around the ankle, in a cute way. I like the bootcuts in size Blue 5 but I have a feeling if I went down a size in the straight leg, they’d be a little too snug.

I can see these jeans being a really good alternative to skinny jeans if you want the same straight leg look, without the skinny-tightness. If you do want a skinnier look, you could try going down a size. These jeans are also good if you’re just over the bootcut/flare look and want a true straight leg.

The Right Fit straight leg jeans are available online now in average lengths for $54.50. They’re priced higher because of the additional detailing and (noticeably) improved fabrication. Honestly, I think $55 is a fair price for these jeans. If nothing else, I  know I can bend over in a pair of Right Fit jeans and not flash my panties at passersby! That’s actually a major issue for me, so the fit at the waist is worth the price of admission.

If you’re a fan of the Right Fit line in general, I think you’ll like this latest addition. If you have any questions about the new jeans, feel free to leave a comment on this post. I’ll try my best to answer!

What’s new: Cacique/Lane Bryant

I wasn’t able to get to Lane Bryant until this past weekend. I’m glad I went when I did and made sure to go to my favorite store because I discovered something that I’m really excited about. Let me tell you about the new demi bra as I promised I would, though.

So, you’re well aware by now that there’s a new demi push up bra. Since I’m between sizes (a large C cup or a small D cup, depending on the shape of the bra), I grabbed three different sizes to try on. I think the 44C fit the best. I do really like the demi overall, which is interesting because that demi shape doesn’t generally work for me. I wish the bands were stretchier but overall, it’s a pretty bra that I wouldn’t want to rip off after having it on for more than a couple of hours.

If you’re looking for a feminine bra in nice colors (including grey, which is pretty unique as far as lingerie goes)  that has an uplifting shape without being terribly uncomfortable, I would recommend the demi push up.

The website has it in sizes 36C – 44DDD. I don’t think the demi shape would work well for sizes much larger than that because of the way the cups are shaped. You’d spill right out of the top of it and the straps aren’t thick enough. So I understand why the sizing is limitied.

While I was trying that on, the manager asked me if I had seen the new tee shirt bra they’re testing. Uh, no, gimme! She said that store is one of only two stores in all of Chicago that have it. I love anything new or limited or special so I grabbed three (like I said, between sizes) and got to work.

The 44D was very comfortable but a little too big in the cup so I tried a 44C. Bingo! This is the most comfortable bra I’ve ever worn that has an underwire and gives me actual cleavage.

It has very light padding in the cup for smoothness and the outer and inner fabric is cotton/spandex. I only saw black, white and beige and I’m pretty sure the largest size I saw was 44DDD but I didn’t look too closely. I grabbed two at $30 because I just really don’t want to be without this bra. I might go back for two more.

I wish I had a picture but it’s not anywhere online yet. All I know so far is that it’s being tested in limited stores and Lane Bryant hopes to release it in 2010.

People, seriously, if you have a chance to try on the tee shirt bra, DO IT. I have no idea which stores are carrying it (other than the one in Chicago, downtown on Wabash) so you may need to call around. I’d guess that a big, flagship store is more likely to have it but you never know.

All I know for sure is that I love it and I really hope Lane Bryant decides to carry it. And I’d be extra happy if it came in cute colors and patterns but I would settle for boring beige, quite happily.

A question about sweaters from Lane Bryant

This comment was posted by Suzannah on an earlier post:

Just a Lane Bryant question? Have you tried on any of their new sweaters? I was just at the website, I have never ordered anything from them, and have two friends who contradicted each other, one says everything runs large, the other the opposite! I love the cable knit babydoll sweater and the space dye tie front cardigan. I think the closest store may carry them but that is still 45 mins one way!! Just wondering your opinion, maybe a good sale going on!

I haven't been into a Lane Bryant store very recently so I haven't seen the new sweaters in person yet. I can say that, at least for me, Lane Bryant's sweater/top sizing is very consistent with the size chart. I've worn a 22/24 in every top I've bought there for the last, I don't know, 7 years or so and that's with some weight loss and gain. If I was forced to say whether their tops run big or small, I'd say they run on the slightly bigger side. Not huge, just generous.

Before you go hopping in the car, I should point out the following:

The website sometimes gets new items before stores do. You might want to call ahead to see if they have the new sweaters you're looking at online.

This is the first round of fall stuff. They'll get more sweaters as the season progresses. This initial crop is looking very promising, though.

Lastly, buying clothes when they first come out is tempting but wait. All this new stuff will go on sale soon, believe me. Just wait for a sweater sale or for a really good coupon to pop up. Lane Bryant sometimes has 40% off coupons you can use online. Those are great if you're confident about your size. You can also sign up to get on their email list and they'll send you coupons you can print out or you can have them mailed to you. Don't ever pay full price at Lane Bryant!

Right Fit denim trousers!!!1!

I'm so excited right now! I just noticed that the Lane Bryant website now has Right Fit denim trousers, which really excites me for some reason. If you're looking for them, they're in Bottoms > New Arrivals. I'm going to order a pair and report back here. Yay!

Right Fit denim capris!

Right Fit denim capris Yay! Another Right Fit item from Lane Bryant! Just in time for spring, they're offering denim caprisicon in the Right Fit sizing. What's really awesome (well, for me) is the 21" inseam. A lot of capris are more like crops on me so I'm happy to see a shorter inseam on these.

I know a lot of "fashion experts" gag at the very sight of capri pants because they're not super flattering but you know what? It gets hot and a lot of women prefer capris instead of shorts or skirts. I happen to be one of them. Get over it!

I'm excited that Lane Bryant is continuing to expand the Right Fiticon collection. I was a little worried that they'd come out with the jeans and that'd be it but nope! There are already three styles of jeans, two styles of pants, and now the denim capris. Awesome.

Spotted! More Right Fit pants!

Lafayette pantsThe Lafayette panticon from Lane Bryant is now available in Right Fit. Compared to the Houston pantsicon, which are definitely a classic wide leg trouser, the Lafayette pants have a slimmer leg with a bootcut shape. I haven't seen these new Right Fit Lafayettes in person, just on the website, but I do like the old version of the same pants. I bet the Right Fits are even better. They're only available in black currently. I hope to see more color options some time soon.

Adorable new lingerie at Lane Bryant

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Lane Bryant has a TON of new lingerie and some of it is so cute I could just DIE. Really. I died and then came back to write this post. BooOo0o.

But seriously, Lane Bryant has really been stepping it up with their Cacique line of plus size lingerie over the past few years. A lot of it is just as cute, if not cuter, than what you'd find in misses' lingerie stores. And they're offering free shipping on ALL orders until February 1st.

Let's take a look at what's new.

Satin laced mesh hipstericon

I love little details in lingerie. A teensy ruffle here, a tiny sequin there, you get the picture. I wasn't really excited about these mesh hipster pantiesicon until I saw the lace up detail on the back. Totally adorable! Truth be told, I am really fond of pink and black together and corset detailing, so it's no surprise that I like these.

Cherry print underwire balconette braicon Cherry print hipstericon

I want this cherry print balconette braicon and cherry print hipstericon right NOW. The balconette bra provides some serious uplift, I love Lane Bryant's hipster cut panties, and the cherries are very fresh and springy. Winner all around.

A comment from a Lane Bryant employee

A reader named Vicki left this comment on one of my posts about Lane Bryant's Right Fit jeans. I think it's worth bumping up into its post. Vicki, I hope you don't mind. If so, let me know and I'll delete it.

----

Hi, I work for Lane Bryant and I have a few comments. First they are aware of the smell of the right fit jean and stores should have the non smelling ones now or soon to be. Please don't run into the store yelling at the associates demanding the jeans when that store might not have them yet. Some LB's have the Houston (black only) in the right fit as well.

When we first were trained on how to size the customer it seemed cut and dry. Then when it came to trying them on is something different. Here it goes when being measured for the blue for some reason we have to go down 3 sizes. Don't understand why but we are learning and thats what we came up with. Yellow is 1 or 2 sizes down. Red is 2 to 3 down. If you like our old fit get the red. Most people can wear the reds. It's the yellow and blue that are so extreme. You can't be both.

Febreze saves the day!

In an effort to save my stinky Right Fit jeans, I picked up a bottle of extra strength Febreze at Target. I started by really spraying the jeans well, letting them dry, and put them through a wash cycle. They came out less stinky but not dramatically so. I tried again, spraying them liberally and letting them air dry, twice. The smell is almost gone but it'll take one more spray down and wash cycle to get rid of the smell completely. So if your Right Fit jeans smell like... whatever that smell is... try Febreze and don't be stingy with it. I went through half a 16 ounce bottle already but it's worth it!

Also, I always wash my jeans inside out and I haven't noticed any bleeding at all. I wouldn't wash them with lighter colored clothing anyway.

More about Right Fit jeans... yeesh.

I do have two complaints about the new Right Fiticon jeans. One, my pair of bootcuts in "Dark Rinse Denim" have a very noticable smell. I'm guessing it's the dye they use for that particular color because the pair I have in the "Medium Vintage Sandblast" don't have the same issue.

I'm going to try hosing them down with Febreeze before washing them and see if that helps. The smell won't keep me from wearing them but it is noticeable and they've been washed several times already. I hope that complaint has made its way up the ladder because a lot of people have mentioned it, including Lane Bryant sales associates.

Two, I tried on the flares and the denim is different from the bootcuts. It's thinner and not as substantial. The fit was nice but every lump and bump on my backside was made a little too obvious for me. This is the one time I'll say that I wish they were more like the old flares. I liked the denim they used for those a lot more.

CatherinesDid you know that Catherine'sicon has Right Fit jeans and pants, too? The jeans only come in one cut (classic straight leg) but they go up to the Right Fit size 12. There are basic career pants, too. If you need a larger size than what's available at Lane Bryant but still want to try the Right Fit line, Catherine's is an option.

Follow up: Right Fit Jeans

I've gotten many comments on my first post about Lane Bryant's Right Fit jeans. Most of the comments are very positive but there seems to be a few people who aren't so pleased. I want to address some of the things that are coming up in regards to the new jeans.

First, let me say that I alway appreciate comments - they let me know I'm not just typing to myself here. And it's good to share our experiences so that other people can be armed with knowledge. I rarely buy much of anything anymore without doing at least a little bit of research. That's part of why I write this blog - I want to help people make informed choices when shopping for clothes.
