So, basically, this billboard is not merely fat-hating and based on false premises, but completely nonsensical. And in its nonsense, it’s echoing a trend in most of the public discussions of fat, food, and health that take place in this culture — speaking about fat people as if we’re not in the fucking room and have nothing to say on the matter. As if we’re merely a problem for thin people to solve.

There are plenty of other articles and blog posts and community threads about PETA's offensive "Save the whales" billboard but Kate likes to swear as much as I do (I restrain myself here, it's hard) and really, this is one topic that calls for a lot of swearing.

Just read both of your posts about this matter. I have to say I was quite shocked and offended, I used to respect PETA for trying to save animals and all that as I am a animal lover, but after this, I guess they just went too far..

Hate won't make me thinner. Hasn't worked for the last 30 some odd years, won't work now. And yesterday I ate a hamburger, just for PETA.

They have this up in my town, too. It was posted on our local paper's website and people are outraged - "even skinny people are pissed" as one commenter said.
After they went around killing dogs they adopted from the humane societies, PETA has no moral leg to stand on.

What's wrong with PETA? This ad is amazingly ignorant. “Save the Whales?” is a derogatory statement that insults all women. I’m the owner of Kingley&Posh, a fashion label that caters to curvy women and it’s appalling that PETA would be insulting in an effort they think reduces animal consumption. This ad was tasteless and should be discontinued.

PETA does a lot of good work, but they also do a lot of stupid things. They waste money on campaigns that only make them look more ridiculous and harder to take seriously. Which in turn makes vegetarians and vegans look ridiculous, too. I've been vegan for 6 years, was vegetarian for 2 before that, and I'm still a lovely curvy size, and I know plenty of people who are vegan and eat smart and are even larger. A better use of their money would have been to talk about HEALTH directly, show some numbers correlating heart disease and meat eaters, something logical and not juvenile.

That.. I have no words... how did anyone think that a billboard like that was a good idea.. in any sense of the word. I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan but I do eat very healthy and I enjoy my boca burgers over a regular burger, but I am a size 18 and even if I lost 100 pounds I would still be bigger.. it's just the way some people are built. I will never be a size 2 and I know that and I'm just fine with that. But you don't have to be super skinny to still be healthy. I am very disappointed with PETA right now. I've had a peta "i am not a nugget" sticker on my laptop for years now the one with the cute little chick on it.. now that was a good campaign.. this one however.. is an epic failure.

I put myself on their mailing list a couple of months back, and my husband gave me such a hard time when the first piece of mail showed up. If this is the kind of stuff they do, I can see why! This is not only incredibly offensive, but ignorant as well. I actually just got a bunch of address labels with a request for donation in the mail the other day, thinking of putting them through my shredder then mailing them back.

PETA is a mess. I think they've lost their moral compass. And their regular compass as well. It's hard to figure them out nowadays. They are like the pro-lifers that want to murder abortion doctors.

PETA is the biggist bunch of idiot around and so is all those pathetic celeberties that support PETAs agenda especialy PAMELA ANDERSON and ALEC BALDWIN

So this is how PETA squanders the money donated to them by well meaning but misinformed fools putting up stupid and offensive billboards and look at all those hollywood wackos who still do stupid ads for them
