As you (hopefully!) know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Torrid is doing their part to help find a cure by donating 20% of the profits from their Pink Ribbon Boutique to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. There are several cute items to choose from, including my favorite - a set of two pins that say "I (heart) boobs" and "Big or small, let's save them all."

The thing that bothers me about the campaign, while I think it is nice that Torrid wants to raise money, is that they frame it in such a way that it is all about breasts. "Save the ta-tas" doesn't invoke the horror of death or chemo- its all about the breasts, and keeping them. Shouldn't it be "Save the women"?
Plus the usual complaints that spending money on stuff is not the same as activism, and that people should just donate to the cause, and that all the pink stuff sold in the name of breast cancer (pots, irons, yogurt, milk, cookies, chips, chemically based cleaners) annoys me, esepcially when its something that might contribute to cancer.
That said, I loved the plain pink necklace.

I agree with you, JenLovesPonies. At the same time, October is my favorite month for two reasons: BIRTHDAY!!! and pink stuff.

Jen, I am inclined to agree BUT I think it's good that Torrid is trying to draw younger women in. Early education is important, it gets young women asking if close family members were ever diagnosed with any kind of cancer. It's also great that they're giving a full 20% of their profits from those items, most retailers give far less.

Oh yes, its great that there is money being funneled towards breast cancer. I just hope that we aren't simply raising "awareness" but truely giving women an education on breast cancer- I read an interesting article in yesterday's Daily Herald about all the myths surround breast cancer (its mostly hereditary, when only 5-10% of cases are, stuff like that) and how awareness isn't enough, we also need facts.
