Alright, it's time to discuss that "Fat Chance" show that aired on Oxygen over the weekend. Who saw it, what did you think? You know I have an opinion, I just need to sleep on it a bit more. I'll offer my two cents after I read what others have to say. Discuss.

Making sure comments in MT work correctly, don't mind me. TypeKey isn't working properly so go ahead and comment without it.

Mixed opinion on Fat Chance. On the one hand - as a fat girl who has never felt beautiful, I found it awesome that maybe some of those girls were feeling beautiful for the first time in their lives. And it did give me hope for myself. On the other hand - still a "beauty" pageant, which I despise, and still the "fat girls like to eat" mindset. I mean, *I* enjoy food, but I it's not the focus of my life.

I wrote about it on my blog

I've commented on this a bunch, here's basically what I say each time.
I loved about the show is that it gave these women a sense of worth. They are all still wonderful people despite their weight. And they should still have the opportunities that anybody else would have. One woman wanted to be a singer but producers wouldn't even look at her. She was really beautiful, just heavy, and sang great.
I don't think these women should embrace their size to the point of not trying to get healthier. I just wish the world wasn't so cruel to people in this situation. That way they could feel worth and still accomplish much in life. And hopefully better health is part of that. I wish we had a system that could provide more help with that too.
:-) Hopeful

I sort of have mixed feelings. I too don't like the beauty paegent thing or the "MMmmm food" angle. BUT I was happy that they did not have gals on there that are barely a size 12 and only while PMSing. I'm glad that they had some REAL plus sized women featured.

My thoughts: I'm pissed I don't have a Torrid anywhere near me! That junk was CUTE!
The only place I heard of this show was a Nightline special a few nights before, where they talked to Mo'nique and the CEO of Torrid about their experiences as a plus size shopper. I think I got more out of that than the pageant itself.
I didn't have a problem with it being a pageant, I liked watching them walk around in hot outfits, jiggling in their high heels. I wish I could have that much self esteem.

I loved it. I laughed, I cried, I cheered. I'm not crazy about beauty pageants either, but I liked this one. Oh, and a comment on a comment - I don't think they were wonderful people "despite their weight". I think they were wonderful people, period.
